His technique is perfect, I can clearly see the thousands of hours Mr Glenn Brown spent developing his style (and trying to scape from Bacon’s long shadow). Each painting is admirable, organic, eye-challenging.
But I think he lost something. He lost the current time, the present. He makes rendition to Velázquez, “El Greco”, Dalí and many other great masters but all of them were dedicated to their present. They knew the people they were portraying, they portrayed their time.
A portrait has a lot to explain about the time when it was made, about the society, about the model and most of all about the artist. I feel really sad when I look at his paintings, all his innovation, his technique, his “brush power” don’t show the true soul of the artist. I would love to see a Pamela Anderson or an Obama portrait made by him, or maybe just a portrait of his neighbour. That would show me the true emotions, the true feelings, the true, brave, ‘first-hand’ art that sleeps in Glenn Brown.
Please, don’t miss this artist, whatever my opinion is, he is a must-see.
